Will Your Home Insurance Policy Replace Your Awning

Your home insurance policy is an investment you make to help protect the value of your home. Getting the right type and amount of coverage is critically important. Policies do differ from one provider to the next. Yet, most policies offer protection for your home’s installed fixtures. That may include theHome Insurance awning extending out from your home. Here is more insight into when you have coverage.

What is the Type of Structure?

Most home insurance policies cover the structure of your home. They also usually include any permanent fixture attached to the home. Let’ say you have a patio with a permanent awning. It attaches directly to your home. So, the policy is likely to cover the awning. If, however, the awning does not attach to the home or you put it up and take it down, you may not have coverage in the same way.

What Caused the Damage?

The next concern in filing a claim relates to the underlying cause of the damage. For example, if the damage occurred as a result of a storm, that may have coverage. Perhaps a tree branch fell and hit it. You may have a situation where vandalism occurs and causes damage. This could have coverage also. On the other hand, your home insurance does not cover incidents related to poor maintenance and upkeep. If the awning falls as a result of rusting or poor maintenance, your policy does not offer any coverage to you for that loss.

How to File a Claim

Take the time to contact your home insurance agent to discuss your policy and your coverage. You may need to document the incident with photos or, in some cases, your agent may need to come to the home to view the damage. The goal here is to gather as much insight as possible into the cause of the problem. This determines what happens next. If your insurance covers the loss, it may help with the removal of the existing awning and replacement of one that is much like it. The value provided depends on the type of replacement insurance you have. Awnings are a typical type of property covered by your home insurance policy. However, if it is new and worth a significant amount of money, be sure to contact your agent to discuss coverage. You should add this feature of your home to your policy.
